Kilcoyne returning to area as Adrian College lacrosse leader in game at SLU

CANTON - Former St. Lawrence Central standout Cody Kilcoyne will be returning to the North Country this afternoon as a leading contributor for the Adrian College men’s lacrosse team as the Bulldogs take on St. Lawrence University in a Division III non-league game at Hall-Leet Field starting at 4 p.m.

A junior attackman, Kilcoyne has already generated seven goals and two assists in helping to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-0 start to the 2013 season. He has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player for the second straight week after scoring five goals on five shots in a 13-10 win over Aurora, Ill., last week. He also recorded five groundballs and caused a pair of turnovers as the Bulldogs set their sights on defending their MIAA regular season and playoff championships.

Kilcoyne, who began his collegiate career at Clarkson University, transferred to Adrian after his freshman season and made an immediate impact last spring, finishing as the fifth leading scorer on the team with 26 goals and 20 assists for 46 points as a sophomore.

The coaching staffs for both squads in this afternoon’s contest also have strong North Country ties. SLU head coach Mike Mahoney, who took over the position in 1997, and assistant coach Kyle Benton are also St. Lawrence Central products who went on to star for the Saints’ men’s hockey program before settling into successful coaching roles. Adrian head coach Don LaSala and his younger brother, Henry, who serves as assistant coach, are Canton products. Don LaSala was named head coach in July of 2011 after having served as an assistant for the Clarkson men’s lacrosse program.
