EVANS MILLS — Six people were taken to hospitals after a two-vehicle crash Tuesday afternoon on Bedlam Road that left one of the vehicles resting upside down.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said the 2:15 p.m. crash occurred when a 2009 Buick Enclave operated by Kimberly C. Iozzo, 31, Lawton, Okla., drove at full speed into the back of a 2000 Jeep Cherokee driven by Sherry L. Jones, 21, Ashtabula, Ohio, as Ms. Jones waited to make a left turn.

Ms. Iozzo told deputies that she had turned to look into the back of her vehicle, and that when she turned around she could not avoid crashing into the Jeep, which overturned.

Ms. Jones was taken by helicopter to Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, as a precautionary measure. While deputies did not have specifics on Ms. Jones’s condition, she was described as stable.

A passenger in the Jeep, Jennifer L. Lowe, whose age was not listed, was taken to Carthage Area Hospital. A third occupant of the Jeep, Winston T. Ward, whose age was not listed, was taken to Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown.

Ms. Iozzo and her two passengers, Winston M. Iozzo, 7, and Hannah-Jane M. Iozzo, 3, were taken to Samaritan Medical Center, but no injuries were listed.

Both vehicles were reported as receiving major damage.

Deputies said a witness to the crash, fellow motorist Carol Lowe, Philadelphia, was forced to turn her vehicle into a ditch to avoid colliding with Ms. Jones’s Jeep as it rolled toward her. Ms. Lowe’s vehicle did not sustain any damage.

Ms. Iozzo was ticketed with following too closely and with having a child under 7 years old in the back seat without a restraint. Further charges are pending.

Other agencies that assisted at the scene were Fort Drum Ambulance, Evans Mills Ambulance, Indian River Ambulance, the Evans Mills Fire Department and Fort Drum police.

The road was reopened about 3:15 p.m.
