SAFE Act

To The Editor:

I will neither try to argue with nor dissuade another letter about the SAFE Act, as he does have some valid points, but he has some falsehoods also.

Further regulation is not demanded by the constitution, more laws are not the answer, but how about enforcing the laws that we already have. I recall a few years back the possession of an unregistered hand gun was a five year jail sentence. I don’t recall hearing of anybody paying that price.

Gun owners do not have the idea to ure mental illness, but the majority of us agree that keeping guns out of the unstable persons hands is the right thing to do.

We also know that change is coming, but taking the right to our gun of choice is not the answer either; the bad guy will still get the gun he wants, no matter what. I am not forfeiting my right to voice; I am an American first.

I am also repulsed by gun violence. I lost a child to a gun incident a few years back, but I ever blamed the gun. It was the man holding that gun. Ammunition does not end up in a six-year-old’s chest by choice; the man did that.

If you read what Chief Currier said, I agree with him. There is a young man from outside the area, caught with two illegal, loaded handguns, the law has got to deal with people like that, not make it harder for the honest person and that’s just what Gov. Cuomo’s new law is doing, making it far more difficult for us, the honest people to own our gun of choice.

I am infuriated by the Newtown incident but not with the gun, with the man that did the shooting. Recall that he also killed his mother to get the gun he used. You have the right to support the representative of your choice as do I and I know who will not be getting my vote in my district. God help us if we lose our Second Amendment rights. Which one will be next?

All we have to do is enforce the laws we already have - not create more and more of a nanny state than is being created now. We must be responsible for us and ours. We don’t need the government to legislate that.

God bless America.
