Local colleges: VanDeValk’s 7 points guide Clarkson women’s lacrosse

POTSDAM — Katie VanDeValk scored five goals and assisted on two others as the Clarkson University women’s lacrosse team opened the season with a 15-9 win over village rival SUNY Potsdam in a nonconference game at SUNY Potsdam on Wednesday.

Alyssa Cristaldi and Christine Wright each added four goals for the Golden Knights, who led 10-4 at halftime.

Noelle Miller and Marissa Mastronardi also scored for Clarkson.

Margaret Wall and Bailey Weigel both scored three goals for the Bears, who were also playing their season opener.

Denise Johns scored two goals.

MEN’S LACROSSE

ST. LAWRENCE 10, ADRIAN 7

The 19th-ranked Saints (2-0) scored the last four goals to defeat Adrian in a nonconference game in Canton.

Jeremy Vautour led SLU with three goals. Tucker Garfield and Justin Ingram both tallied two. Pierson Fowler, Garrett Gagne and Josh Robinson also scored for the Saints.

Former St. Lawrence Central standout Cody Kilcoyne scored two goals for Adrian (2-1). Mitch Burgin also scored two goals for Adrian, while John Hudzinski, Tom Thielman and Nathan Carroll added single goals.

NAZARETH 10, CLARKSON 7

Trevar Haefele, Nick Loscalzo and Jason Boike each scored two goals to help Nazareth (2-2) defeat the Golden Knights in a nonconference game at Onondaga Community College.

Chris Aycock, Troy Haefele, Luke Wooters and Chris Peterson also scored for Nazareth.

Peter Goss led Clarkson (1-1) with three goals. Corey Herrington scored twice and Jeff Sciera and Matthew Gold also scored for Clarkson.

CAZENOVIA 9, SUNY CANTON 8

Brent Brearly scored with 3 minutes, 35 seconds left to lead host Cazenovia (1-0) past the Kangaroos in a nonconference game.

Former Potsdam High School standout Kyle Kingsley led Cazenovia with three goals in his first collegiate game.

Cory Tilton and Taylor Hastrich each scored twice.

Chris Gamble, Patrick Connell, Garrett DiTullio and Zarrien Sloan all scored twice for the Kangaroos (0-2).
