CANTON A Potsdam man has been indicted on rape charges in connection with a 2011 case involving a teenage girl he told police had seduced him.
A St. Lawrence County grand jury on Thursday handed up six counts against Gregory E. Brown Jr., 27, of 509 Raquette Road. He stands accused of first-degree rape, third-degree rape, first-degree criminal sexual act, first-degree criminal use of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.
Brown allegedly had sexual contact with the girl, then 15, from August to October 2011. According to the indictment, those encounters included forcible compulsion during which he displayed a gun.
He was arrested by Potsdam police in December 2011.
According to his written statement to police, Brown met the girls mother through an online dating site and moved from Georgia to the her Potsdam apartment. There, the girl soon started flirting with him, Brown told police, and enticed him into a liaison one night on the couch. I think shes had sex before because she was comfortable with everything, and she knew what she was doing, Brown wrote.
The girl later used the threat of revealing the first incident to initiate two more sexual encounters, he told police. I got home at about 2:30 in the morning and (she) was waiting up, and she said you remember what happened the first time and I said yeah and she said well it was good and I want some more of it, his statement said. I said no, but she said that if I didnt that she would tell her probation officer the next time she saw her that we had sex. So its not like I had a choice the second or third time.
According to the indictment, Brown engaged in forcible intercourse, forcible anal sex and forcible oral sex with the girl, displaying a loaded gun on at least one occasion.
Police said he was in possession of a loaded 9 mm handgun that had been reported stolen from the state of Georgia.
Somebody needed to switch a dirty gun with a clean gun, and I said I knew where a clean gun was, Brown told police. So basically I stole the gun from (a woman in Georgia) to sell to a guy who never showed up to buy it, so I kept it.
Brown was committed to the St. Lawrence County jail when arrested. He was not in the facility Thursday night, and his status could not be verified.
