PROVIDENCE, R.I. A third straight shutout loss has left the Clarkson University mens hockey team just one defeat away from seeing its season end.
Brown, the No. 7 seed, blanked the No. 10 Golden Knights 3-0 on Friday in the opening game of a best-of-three ECAC Hockey first-round series at the Meehan Auditorium. The teams meet at 7 tonight in game two and if a third game is needed it will start at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Its a situation where you start pressing and you dont feel as much poise as you would normally, Clarkson coach Casey Jones said of the scoring slump. Its frustrating for it to happen at this time.
Brown (12-12-6 overall) struck first Friday with a power-play goal from Mark Naclerio at 15 minutes, 45 seconds of the first period.
I thought we had opportunities tonight, Jones said. Well watch some video and see if there is an opportunity (to generate more offense) tomorrow.
The game remained 1-0 until Matt Lorito scored on a shot that went between the legs of Clarkson goalie Greg Lewis at 6:25 of the third period.
Clarkson pulled Lewis for an extra attacker late in the third period but the Bears sealed the win with an empty-net goal from Joey de Concilys at 19:45.
The Golden Knights were hindered on offense by the loss of leading scorer Allan McPherson, who was injured late against Union in the regular-season finale last Saturday.
McPherson tried to practice during the week but wound up having to sit out this weekends series.
Brown goalie Anthony Borelli finished with 31 saves for the shutout.
The bottom line was we didnt score a goal tonight, Jones said. We had plenty of opportunities and we needed to get one. It will be important for us tomorrow to keep putting pucks on net. We need one to go in so the floodgates can open for us.
