CARTHAGE — A Dexter man faces charges of reckless endangerment and driving while intoxicated after allegedly leading police on a pursuit Friday afternoon in the town of Champion.

Joshua W. Woodruff, 27, of 301 W. Kirby St., was charged by state police with two counts of reckless endangerment, DWI, failure to comply with police orders and numerous vehicle and traffic counts following the pursuit that began on Route 26 near Great Bend just after 3:30 p.m.

Troopers said they initially tried to halt Mr. Woodruff’s vehicle after it was allegedly observed traveling at 78 mph in a 55-mph zone. Police said he failed to stop and drove away at a high rate of speed, traveling onto Jackson II and Jackson roads before abandoning his vehicle at a railroad trestle off Route 26. He allegedly fled on foot and was apprehended by a trooper about a half-mile into a wooded area.

Troopers allege that his blood alcohol count was found to be 0.08 percent, which is the minimum legal level to be considered proof of intoxication under state law. He was additionally charged with reckless endangerment for traveling at least 25 mph above posted speed limits as three passengers in the vehicle pleaded with him to stop.

He was arraigned in Village Court and sent to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building on $1,500 bail.
