River Showdown commitee hosts fundraisers

WADDINGTON – For its next two fundraisers, the St. Lawrence River Showdown committee will be calling for both brains and brawn.

While teams are filling up fast, committee coordinator Deanna Shampine said there is still time to join a softball tournament to be held throughout the day March 16 at Bushnell Field, Massena.

Contestants looking to test their wealth of useless knowledge will have an opportunity at trivia nights hosted by Todd Truax from Q102.9 every Wednesday throughout April in Potsdam, Canton, Ogdensburg, and Massena.

“A final tournament with winners will be announced in Waddington on May 1,” said Waddington Mayor Janet M. Otto-Cassada, who also serves on the committee.

For more information about times and locations, teams can contact Claire Putney at 600-0970.

Committee members said they are hoping to raise at least $1,000 from each tournament to benefit the Bass Anglers Sportsman’s Society’s Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament scheduled for Aug. 8 to 11.

The event is expected to bring thousands of people to the area and have an estimated $2 million economic impact.

The committee has requested up to $60,000 from the St. Lawrence River Redevelopment Agency and from the St. Lawrence County Finance Committee to help fund the tournament.

“We have gone to speak to the Finance Committee, and they were extremely receptive to us,” Mrs. Otto-Cassada said. “Hopefully, when we go back next month with a budget they will be able to come up with some of kind of funding for the tournament.”

The committee has already received help and support from several other individuals, organizations and businesses. The Quality Inn, Massena, agreed to host the Bassmasters production crew. The donated

rooms carry a value of approximately $11,000. North Country Savings Bank donated $3,000. The Waddington Chamber of Commerce donated $1,000. The Waddington Ultimate Fishing Town committee donated $4,500. Teams and spectators of the first annual Waddington Redneck Winter Games raised $2,800.

The committee is also holding a raffle up until the last day of the tournament. For $10, tickets can be purchased to win up to $15,000.

Next week, Mrs. Shampine said, she and commitee members plan to travel to Orange, Texas, for the Bassmaster Elite Series: Sabine River Challenge.

“We were invited to the first Bassmaster event of the season to check it out,” Ms. Shampine said. “Once we get down there we will see how they put one of these things on and we’ll have a better idea of how to organize our own.”
