The Watertown Urban Mission announced this week that the fifth annual Race for Recovery in September has been named in honor of Thomas L. Ivey II, who was killed in an alcohol-related accident in November 2003.
Mr. Ivey, 27, was a front-seat passenger in a vehicle driven by Michael S. Wallace, who was charged with driving while intoxicated. The accident happened in the town of Alexandria.
We lost someone more precious than life itself, our only son, Tommy, Thomass mother, Martha, said in a news release. This tragedy was preventable. Well never have our son back, but we hope that by telling everyone we can about his story, we can help prevent your family from enduring our pain. Were honored to be able to do that through the victims impact panels and now the 2013 Run for Recovery.
The Race for Recovery, a 5k/10k walk-run, will be held Sept. 7. Proceeds will benefit the missions Bridge Program, which is an alternative-to-incarceration program for repeat DWI offenders. About 250 racers and several sponsors for the 2012 race helped raise $16,500 for the program.
Participants this year will follow a new course, which will start at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds and go out VanDuzee Street to outer East Main Street, and into Glen Park along Route 12E. Following the race, there will be an awards ceremony with free food, a silent auction, entertainment and activities for children.
People who register before Aug. 26 will receive a T-shirt and a gift bag. Preregistration for the race is $20, or $25 on race day. A six-member team is $110, and individual racers or teams associated with the military will receive a 10 percent discount.
Alpine Fence Co. has been named lead sponsor. Owner Nicholas L. Washburn used the Bridge Program to rise above difficulties after his driving while intoxicated arrest six years ago, according to Andrew G. Mangione, Watertown Urban Mission director of development.
Im proud to give back to make this event a success, Mr. Washburn said in a news release.
To become a sponsor, people or businesses can call Mr. Mangione or Bridge Program director Salvatore J. Ciulo at 782-8440.
