Write-ins to decide Croghan trustee seats

CROGHAN — Village residents will once again need to select trustees via write-in ballots.

Two four-year trustee seats will be up for grabs in this year’s election, to be held from noon to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Village Hall on Convent Street.

However, no residents filed nominating petitions to get their names on the ballot, meaning the top two vote-getters through write-in votes will be offered the seats.

If either or both of the two victors were to decline the position, the Board of Trustees would be allowed to appoint someone to fill any vacancy until the next election, according to Lewis County election officials.

That situation is not unusual for Croghan.

Mayor Bruce Widrick was elected in 2008 and last year by write-in votes after no one filed petitions to run for the position.

Also, in 2008 and 2009, only one trustee candidate filed petitions, leaving a second seat that was filled both years via write-in.

And last year, only one trustee candidate again got his name on the ballot beforehand, leaving a four-year and one-year seat to be determined by write-in votes.

One other Lewis County village, Copenhagen, will hold an election Tuesday.

Mayor Kenneth R. Clarke is running unopposed for another two-year term while Mark Souva and Trustee Gerald Snyder will run for a pair of two-year board seats.

Castorland, Lowville and Turin have no elections this year.

And Constableville, Lyons Falls and Port Leyden moved their elections to November last year, allowing the county Board of Elections to oversee them and cover any costs, while Harrisville has held its elections in the fall since 2003.
