Henderson boat launch closed after vandalism

HENDERSON — The town’s boat launch will be closed for at least a month after vandals damaged the grass around the area off Military Road.

The damage, discovered about 9 a.m. Wednesday, came in the form of tire ruts, some as deep as a foot.

“It’s not usable,” Supervisor Raymond A. Walker said Thursday afternoon. The damage makes the ground a hazard for walking and could lead to vehicles getting stuck in the mud.

The town filed a report with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department to log the damage and to make a claim with its insurance company.

The Town Council on Wednesday night voted to offer a $500 reward for information leading to an arrest in the case.

“We’ve got to make a stand here,” Deputy Supervisor Carol A. Hall said. The council also discussed placing cameras at the boat launch site to deter future vandalism.

An assessment of how the site will be repaired has yet to be made. Among the options is smoothing out the damage and reseeding the grass.

Highway Superintendent Harold J. Nelson said work to fix the area cannot start until the weather warms up and the ground thaws. He said placing stones at the launch area would not work, as they would sink into the clay soil.

The repair work is expected take the Highway Department at least eight hours.
