AMHERST - The Louisville Lightning midget team was crowned the New York state Tier III U16 champions after edging Great Neck 2-1 in the state title game Sunday in Amherst.
Louisville had earned the chance to skate for the state title by downing neighboring Norfolk-Norwood 6-1 in a semi-final matchup.
The Lightning had downed N-N 5-1 and the Palisades Predators 6-2 and tied the Valley Eagles 4-4 in the preliminary round.
Great Neck had advanced to the championship game by skating to a 5-3 victory over the Valley Eagles in the semi-finals after outscoring their opponents 28-6 in their three preliminary round games.
Tri-Town and Nort Franklin also skated in the U16 state tournament.
The Louisville U18 dropped a 4-1 decision to Jamestown in the title game after downing the Geneva General s 7-1 in a semi-final matchup,
The Lightning U18 team skated to victoriesover the New York Skyliners (6-2) and Valley Eagles (5-3) and were edged by Bear Mountain (5-4) in preliminary round action.
