MASSENA - The Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently presented Massena Memorial Hospital a check to purchase equipment for the Medical Surgical Unit at the hospital. The monies will be used to purchase a Verscare Patient Bed for the Medical Surgical Unit along a Vital Signs Monitor.
Each year the MMH Auxiliary offers fund raisers with the intent to purchase equipment for the hospital. In 2012, the auxiliary donated money to purchase a Transvenous Pacemaker-Medtronic 5388 — for the Intensive Care Unit and Emergency Department. These pieces of equipment are used as a temporary pacemaker for a patient; a wire is passed through the vein into the heart to provide electrical stimulus for the heart to beat.
The Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary offers many opportunities to volunteer at the hospital at the Information Desk, Gift Shop and Beverage Cart. Additionally, auxiliary members can be seen setting up Christmas trees in the cafeteria, Levine Outpatient Center, the board room, the front entrance and ICU and OB waiting rooms.
The Auxilians also make headgear, pillows and blankets for cancer patients, along with cloth bags for wheelchairs and walkers. Last year they held two work bees putting together the handmade items for patients with 35 members offering a helping hand. The work bees are organized by Kathy Adams, to complete and start sewing projects for the hospital.
The auxiliary also gives teddy bears to all the pediatric patients and newborns. Over the last two years, 692 teddy bears, 279 pillows, 54 bags and 12 hats have been given to the hospital for patients.
The Massena Memorial Hospital Auxiliary raises money with special projects throughout the year to purchase equipment or enhance patient care at the hospital. Anyone interested in offering a few hours of volunteer time can join the hospital Auxiliary at anytime. The auxiliary has projects continuously throughout the year, and services within the hospital.
The auxiliary aids in many volunteer efforts including the Information Desk, gift shop patient juice cart, community health fairs and seminars, just to name a few. There are nearly 200 auxiliary members who have baked, sewn, counted, poured, carried smiled, directed, sold, informed and most of all given of themselves countless hours to help others and the hospital.
