Child care employees at Fort Drum to avoid furloughs, preserving operations

FORT DRUM — Child care workers have received a reprieve from potential furloughs with guidance issued Monday by the Secretary of Defense.

The new guidance, described in a letter posted on the post’s Facebook page, provides an exemption to non-appropriated fund employees such as those who work in child care.

That means if furloughs were to begin within the next month, child care will still be offered Monday through Friday at current levels.

Post spokeswoman Julie A. Cupernall said the announcement should ease the minds of parents, particularly ones in uniform unaffected by furloughs.

“How were they going to go to work and make sure their children were being taken care of?” she said. “The military population was seeing there wasn’t enough availability to take all of the children on Fridays.”

The post’s child care facilities have faced problems in recent months as Army budget reductions and hiring freezes created staffing shortages and a reduction in services. Several local day-care centers told the Times last week that the potential furloughs had led to several inquiries about openings.
