Citing low customer traffic, KeyBank on Monday will yank out the ATM machine at the entryway of its downtown location permanently.

The move is part of KeyBank’s overall strategy to remove automatic teller machines that aren’t being used enough at branches that have more than one, said Therese J. Myers, the bank’s vice president of public affairs. The ATM at the drive-through lane behind the building, which will remain open, is used more frequently.

“We’re finding that more and more customers are doing their banking either online or with mobile banking,” Ms. Myers said, “and so we’ve seen usage of our ATMs drop. In places where the ATM traffic doesn’t require two machines, we are removing one. They look at the demographics and traffic” to make the decision.

For that same reason, an ATM was removed about a month ago from the inside of KeyBank’s branch at 175 Arsenal St. That location still has a drive-up ATM.

Though its ATM machine will be gone, Ms. Myers said, KeyBank plans to fully renovate its downtown location in May. Equipment, office furniture and walls will be updated.

Donald G.M. Coon III, managing partner for building landlord 200 Washington Street Associates, said the project is expected to be completed by an outside company.

Ms. Myers said no further information about the project is available.
