HEUVELTON – At the annual banquet for the Heuvelton Volunteer Fire Department Daniel M. Basford received the Chief’s Award for his service to the department in 2012.

“The Chiefs award is given to somebody who helps the Chief out, someone who stands out for making our job easier through the year,” Heuvelton Fire Chief Mark D. Basford said of the award that honored his father.

“It’s easy to call him and ask him to help me out,” Chief Basford said of his father.

The award banquet, held Saturday evening, was attended by roughly 200 people, Chief Basford said.

In addition to the Chiefs Award, Mr. Basford, a former chief of the department, won the Agitator of the Year award.

Chief Basford said past Agitators get together and “figure out who stirred the pot the most… it’s a fun award.”

“He did a good job at keeping things interesting,” Chief Basford said of his father.

Jennifer Hynes, former emergency medical service captain for the department, was given the EMS Provider of the Year award.

Ms. Hynes recently left the department after serving for more than five years.

“She just stepped down so we wanted to honor her,” Chief Basford said. “When she needs to be there she’s there.”

“I am very honored to be able to work with a group of men and women that are as professional and knowledgeable as the members of this department,” Chief Basford said.

The department responded to 329 incidents in 2012.
