Local college athletics: Lee among future SUNY Potsdam Hall inductees

POTSDAM — Former SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey standout Chris Lee, who went on to play professionally in the U.S. and in Europe, is among the players and teams selected for induction into the Bears Hall of Fame, SUNY Potsdam announced.

Lee, who graduated in 2004, joins men’s basketball standout Edane Barton (2006), men’s lacrosse player Chris Mele (1987), and the 1972-73 wrestling and 1995-96 men’s hockey teams in the 2013 class, which will be inducted July 13 at the Knowles Conference Center during reunion weekend.

Lee, from MacTier, Ontario, is 10th all-time in program history in scoring with 115 points (41 goals and 74 assists). He was SUNYAC Player of the Year in 2004. He later played in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. He currently competes in Sweden.

Barton, from Spring Valley, won All-SUNYAC honors in 2004 and 2005 and is seventh in rebounding and ninth in scoring in Potsdam history. He helped the Bears to two SUNYAC titles, winning MVP honors both times.

Mele, from Albany, finished with 167 points for his career, good for fourth in program history. He is second all-time with 125 goals. He was a two-time Potsdam captain and three-time All-SUNYAC selection.

The 1995-96 men’s hockey team is the only Potsdam squad to win the SUNYAC championship. Under coach Ed Seney, the Bears went 18-10-2 and beat Oswego and Plattsburgh in the playoffs. The 1972-73 wrestling team won the SUNYAC Championship during the first year of Maxcy Hall. Under coach Neil Johnson, Potsdam went 12-1 in dual meets.
