Salvation Army offering coupons for furniture donations

MASSENA - If you have some good quality furniture but nowhere to put it, donating it The Salvation Army can mean some money in your pocket.

Massena Salvation Army Commander Lt. Russell Crowsen said they’ll even pick up locally or as far away as Potsdam.

Lt. Crowsen said that starting Monday when their boutique on Highland Road opens at 9 a.m., anyone who donates good quality furniture to the boutique will receive a coupon for $5 off their next purchase there.

“We’re starting a new program for customers to encourage people to donate good quality furniture. If someone donates furniture that’s good quality that we would sell, we will give them a coupon for $5 off their next purchase at the boutique,” he said. “

Furniture is a hot seller at their boutique, Lt. Crowsen said, and they’re trying to keep it stocked. But that’s become harder.

“As soon as we get furniture it goes right out the door. We just can’t keep furniture in stock. They go out the door pretty quickly,” he said.

Lt. Crowsen said they’re looking for good quality furniture in general, including desks, chairs, couches and tables.

“We had one business that was relocating to the reservation, and they donated their display case. We were able to sell that. As long as it’s of good quality, we’ll take it,” he said.

There are other incentives to donate, too, according to Lt. Crowsen.

“If someone donates furniture, but also someone is a first-time customer, we also have some incentives to show our appreciation for first-time shoppers. They can ask about it at the cash register,” he said.

And if someone spends $50 or more on a purchase, they’ll receive a $5 gift card off their next purchase, he said.

There is one caveat. If someone donates more than once a day, they will receive one $5 card.

To make it easier, Lt. Crowsen said they’re willing to pick up furniture locally or as far away as Potsdam if the person can’t deliver it to the boutique.

“They’ll still get a $5 gift certificate off their next purchase,” he said. “Call the boutique (769-2547) and the boutique will arrange the pickup day and time.”

The fact that furniture is flying out the door “creates a good problem,” Lt. Crowsen said, because the proceeds from the sale go right back into The Salvation Army’s community programs.

“When people buy or donate, they’re helping support not only the Massena area, but the greater Massena area because we help out surrounding communities,” he said.
