St. Lawrence puts away Potsdam in second half

CANTON — A second-half surge helped the St. Lawrence University women’s lacrosse team produce a 16-8 victory over SUNY Potsdam in a nonconference game Friday.

SLU (4-2 overall) held a 4-3 lead at halftime and then outscored the Bears 12-5 the rest of the way.

Michaela Maybee and Holly Noyes each scored three goals for SLU. Stephanie O’Rourke added two goals and two assists. Brigid Hurley, Joey Kelley and Caroline Bailey scored twice. Chloe Knapp and Parker Benedict also scored for SLU.

Denise Johns led the Bears (0-3) with three goals. Emily Petit added two goals and two assists. Bailey Weigel, Whitney Boshart and Michelle Varney also scored for SUNY Potsdam.

BASEBALL

PENN STATE-ABINGTON 17, SUNY CANTON 3

Tom Ditro and Bill Parave each produced four hits as Penn State-Abington (5-11) defeated SUNY Canton in a nonconference game in Jenkintown, Penn.

Gerardo Torres went 3-for-5 for the Kangaroos (2-11).

SOFTBALL

BEARS SWEEP

SUNY Potsdam used two different styles of play to sweep a pair of nonconference games in Titusville, Fla., and improve to 4-0.

The Bears won the opener 14-6 over Ecclesia, led by Molly McCuin, who went 3-for-3, including a home run, and drove in six runs.

Heather Johnson went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Brittany Thivierge went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs.

The second game for the Bears featured dominant pitching as Jordan Sarat struck out 13 and threw a one-hit shutout in a 5-0 win over Madison. Amanda Perry went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs.

MEN’S TENNIS

RENSSELAER 6, ST. LAWRENCE 3

Andre Vorbrodt won a singles match and was on a winning doubles team for RPI (8-2) in a Liberty League victory at Latham.

Rhonny Rosario and John Megas won singles matches and Paul Barrett and Michael Hayden won a doubles match for the Saints (6-3).

WOMEN’S TENNIS

ST. LAWRENCE 5, RENSSELAER 4

Morgan McNeal was part of two points for the Saints (3-3) in a Liberty League victory over Rensselaer (7-3) in Latham.

McNeal teamed with Elizabeth Geer to win a doubles match for the Saints and also won a single match.
