Named senior fellow

Steven G. Horwitz, an economics professor at St. Lawrence University, Canton, has been named a senior fellow for the Fraser Institute, an independent conservative think tank based in Canada.

Mr. Horwitz, who also serves as the economics department chair at St. Lawrence, is the author of two books: “Monetary Evolution, Free Banking, and Economic Order and Microfoundations” and “Macroeconomics: An Austrian Perspective.” He has written extensively on political economy; economic and social theory of the family; monetary theory and macroeconomics. He is also a contributing editor at The Freeman and recently received honorable mention in the Reason Foundation’s 2012 Bastiat Prize for Journalism.

The Fraser Institute has active research ties with similar independent organizations in more than 80 countries around the world and publishes peer-reviewed research into critical economic and public policy issues including taxation, government spending, health care, school performance and trade.

Receives recognition

Clifford Davis, a financial representative of Northwestern Mutual, Greater New York Group, in Syracuse, has qualified for the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors Quality Award.

The award recognizes professionalism through education and earned designations, production measured by performance metrics customized for each practice specialty, adherence to the NAIFA Code of Ethics, and service to the industry association.

This is the fifth time Mr. Davis has earned this honor. He has been associated with Northwestern Mutual since 1992. He is a native of Meadville, Pa., and received a bachelor’s degree from Gannon University, Erie, Pa. He received the Chartered Life Underwriter Designation in 1996 and the Chartered Financial Consultant Designation in 2000 from the American College, Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Hotel given award

The Comfort Inn & Suites Hotel Akwesasne, Hogansburg, received the 2013 Platinum Hospitality Award from Choice Hotels International Inc., franchisor of the Comfort Inn brand.

Platinum Awards are given to the top 3 percent of hotels in each brand.

The Comfort Inn & Suites Akwesasne is owned and operated by Tarbell Management Group, Hogansburg.

Firm obtains certification

Jeffords Steel and Engineering Co., Potsdam, has become certified by the American Institute of Steel Construction of quality management at its Potsdam facility. Jeffords Steel and Engineering’s Plattsburg plant has been certified with AICS since 2002.

AISC’s certification programs set the quality standard for the structural steel industry and are the most recognized national quality certification program in the industry. AISC’s certification programs focus on the entire process of fabrication and erection.

Jeffords Steel and Engineering Co. was founded in 1985, and the company’s two facilities cover more than 12 acres with a combined 60,000 square feet of manufacturing space, employing more than 100 people.
