Major firm donates to Clarkson University’s construction management program

POTSDAM — A company known for constructing hospitals, offices and classrooms is building a relationship with a north country university.

Turner Construction Co., New York City, has donated $150,000 to support Clarkson University’s construction engineering management program.

“We are particularly gratified by Turner Construction Company’s support of CEM since it builds on our existing academic alliance,” Clarkson President Anthony G. Collins said. “CEM courses have been taught at Clarkson for more than 30 years, but we’ve seen a fourfold increase in students focusing on this area in the last five years.”

Clarkson’s program has expanded to accommodate the high demand. The donation will be used to add course offerings and curriculum in construction engineering management, which is available as a focus for Clarkson’s civil engineering students.

“It will allow new courses to be taught that will be reflective of what the industry standards are. We’ll be able to offer more state-of-the-industry or state-of-the-art courses,” said Kerop D. Janoyan, associate professor of civil engineering.

Mr. Janoyan said about a third of Clarkson’s civil engineering students elect to focus on construction management, a growing field.

“In the construction industry, job placement is the main thing,” he said. “Our students are going into more construction jobs. The trend has been that construction is hiring more than other industries.”

Turner Construction’s main Clarkson connection is W. Shawn Rosenberger, company vice president and general manager, who is a Clarkson graduate. “It’s very appropriate and rewarding for Turner Construction Company to support Clarkson University and the Beacon Institute,” Mr. Rosenberger said in a written statement. “With this gift and partnership, Turner will help fuel more outreach and industry innovation at this world-class institution.”

The Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries is a nonprofit environmental research subsidiary of Clarkson University.

Mr. Rosenberger will sit on the university’s construction engineering management advisory board, a panel of industry experts who advise Clarkson administrators and faculty to ensure the program’s curriculum is relevant and current.

Turner Construction is the largest general builder in the U.S., with 5,200 employees worldwide and 1,200 projects each year, for an annual construction volume of $8 billion.
