Canton agriculture law too restrictive

I hope the people of Canton will act to end the town board’s foolish attempts to restrict agriculture in the town of Canton. The town board has “compromised” so that, if appropriate permits are obtained, a person living in the town could have a small flock of chickens, no roosters, on three acres of land. Some “compromise.”

In my opinion someone buying land in the town of Canton should have the right to have animals and raise gardens without bureaucratic restrictions. This is what country living is all about. It’s what people expect when they move to the country. It leads to a future of small farms, backyard gardens and green space on the outskirts of Canton rather than housing developments and commercial ventures.

It allows Canton to retain its uniquely rural charm rather than be surrounded by “urban sprawl” so common in America. Small-scale agriculture on the outskirts of Canton is an incentive for young people to move to our town, pay their taxes, raise their families.

I think that the town Planning Board and the town board have overstepped their prerogatives with the zoning laws they are trying to set for rural property. They have been unresponsive to suggested changes. In my opinion, the only reason the town Planning Board needs to become involved is if a person registers a complaint against his neighbor’s agricultural practices.

Please be alert to what is happening here. The town board and Planning Board are attempting to change the very nature of Canton’s future. Don’t let it happen.
