POTSDAM - The SUNY Potsdam lacrosse teams and softball team competed this past week.

MEN’S LACROSSE

The men’s lacrosse team was on the road this past Saturday to face Utica College. The Bears edged the Pioneers with a last second goal by junior captain Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y.), 7-6. Six different Bears scored in the victory. Potsdam would trail 5-3 going into the final quarter of play. Junior midfielder Derek Frost (Williamsville, N.Y.) got Potsdam back to within 5-4 with a man-up goal on an assist from senior attackman Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y.).

Junior attackman Kevin Logan (Brasher Falls, N.Y. ) evened the score with another man-up marker with 5:28 left, but Ben Winkler put Utica back in front 30 seconds later, capitalizing on an extra-man opportunity. Shortly after, freshman attackman Ed Doherty (Amherst, NY) would notch the game-tying goal at six all. With just 25 ticks left on the clock, Kunz buried the game-winning goal to secure the 7-6 win. Senior goalie Stefan Sloma (Niskayuna, N.Y.) continued his strong play between the pipes with six saves to earn his third victory of the season and fourth of his career.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

The women’s lacrosse team traveled down the road to Canton, N.Y. to face local North Country rival St. Lawrence University this past weekend. The Saints defeated the Bears 16-8 to earn the victory. Potsdam would trail by a score of 4-3 going into the half. St. Lawrence started fast in the second stanza to cruise to the win. The Bears were led by senior attack Denise Johns (Marcellus, N.Y.), who recorded three goals and sophomore midfielder Emily Petit (Queensbury, N.Y.) who had two goals and two assists. Junior goalie Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y.) recorded five saves on the day.

SOFTBALL

The softball team traveled south to Titusville, FL for a tough nine-game slate. The Bears went 4-1 over the weekend. On Friday, the Bears swept Ecclesia (AR) and Madison (WI). Potsdam defeated the Royals by a score of

14-6 and shutdown the Wolfpack, 5-0. In the first contest, junior Molly McCuin (Winthrop, N.Y. / St. Lawrence) led the Bears, going three for three with six RBIs and one homerun. Senior Heather Johnson (Heuvelton, N.Y.) finished four for two with three RBIs. Junior Ashley Thayer (Winthrop, N.Y.) allowed four hits in four innings pitch and recorded one strikeout. Freshman Carina Chirinko (Fairport, N.Y.) recorded two strikeouts in her Potsdam debut. In game two, senior Amanda Perry (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) led Potsdam going two for four at the plate with three RBIs. On Saturday, the Bears split with Loras (IA) and Carroll (WI). Potsdam dropped an 11-4 contest to Loras before rallying to defeat Carroll, 10-9. Game one, junior Brittany Thivierge (Schuylerville, N.Y. ) went one for three with two RBIs. Freshman Jordan Sarat (Caledonia, N.Y.) allowed eight hits and finished with six strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Game two; H. Johnson finished two for three with five RBIs and one homerun. M. Johnson concluded two for three with two RBIs. Thayer recorded three strikeouts in three innings. M. Johnson allowed three hits in three innings pitched and tallied three strikeouts.

PERFORMERS OF THE WEEK

Junior Rob Kunz is the Bears’ male performer of the week. The Bears’

captain assisted on the tying goal at Utica with 4:12 remaining and then scored the game-winner with 25 seconds left to lift Potsdam to a 7-6 victory.

Senior Heather Johnson is the Bears’ female performer of the week. Heather Johnson led the Bears to a 2-1 record this past week. The senior captain went five for eight with eight RBIs and accounted for four runs. The Heuvelton native connected on a three run homerun over the center field fence in the fourth inning versus Carroll to give Potsdam the momentum in a 10-9 decision.

UPCOMING GAMES

The men’s lacrosse team is back in action this evening when the Bears travel to Union, N.J. to face Kean University at 6 p.m.

The women’s lacrosse team returns to action on this evening as well when they battle the Southern Maine Huskies at 7 p.m. at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fla.
