CARTHAGE Leaders of the Village Ecumenical Ministries Food Pantry hope the community is up for a challenge.
The food pantry has signed up for a challenge offered by the philanthropic Feinstein Foundation, which is offering matching funds to be distributed proportionately among participating agencies with a minimum of $250 and a maximum of $35,000 donated from the foundation. Donations or pledges received from March 1 to April 30 given specifically toward the challenge are eligible to receive the matching funds. Donations will be accepted in the form of cash, checks, pledges or food items. Each food item is valued at $1 each or per pound, depending on the type.
Darlene A. Jensen, food pantry director, said the Carthage community always has been very generous with donations, but the need is increasing.
There is never enough, especially with budget cuts and cuts to food stamps, she said.
She said the monetary donations are used to purchase food from the Central New York Food Bank. To ensure supplies are available, food bank purchases are made to supplement local donations.
Donations may be delivered or mailed to 452 S. Washington St., Carthage, N.Y. 13619. For more information, call 493-1341.
The food pantry is open from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays, from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays.
