CARTHAGE During its meeting March 19, the River Area Council of Governments elected officers, reviewed an intermunicipal agreement and decided to add a meeting to its schedule.
In their agreement, the villages of Carthage and West Carthage and towns of Wilna and Champion commit to working together for the betterment of their shared area. Through RACOG, the municipalities cooperate on land-use planning and zoning administration, parks and recreation development, staffing, highway management and other general civic services.
The organization also assists in setting priorities for action and in obtaining assistance from outside sources such as the Tug Hill Commission, the Development Authority of the North Country, Jefferson County and the state and federal governments.
RACOG board members will take the agreement back to their respective municipal boards and, upon approval, will sign it.
The board voted to retain G. Wayne McIlroy as chairman and Christina M. Vargulick as secretary/ treasurer, and to elect Terry L. Buckley vice chairman.
The board also agreed to add a fourth meeting to its schedule to tie in with budget preparations for the towns and villages and the organization itself.
The RACOG board will meet at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of February, May, September and November in the village of Carthage meeting room, 120 S. Mechanic St.
