MASSENA - Time is short, but the Potsdam Ice Storm U-16 girls’ hockey team is combining its on ice preparations for next week’s national championships in San Jose, Calif., with a fundraising effort to help defray the costs of sending the team to the West Coast for several days of hockey action next week.

The costs of the trip include plane tickets in the $500 per person range as well as an additional baggage fee in the $100 range for each player’s equipment, hotel rooms average $150 per night and the need to rent vehicles to get the players back and forth to the arena, meals and other team outings. “That’s before we even think about the cost of food,” she said, noting the cost of representing New York state at the national championship is high.

The team, one of three from the area that will be participating in USA Hockey national championships next week, has a number of fundraisers scheduled for this week.

The Ice Storm’s roster includes eight players from Massena, five from Potsdam and one each from Malone, Ogdensburg, Norfolk and Canton.

The fundraising effort will continue with a spaghetti feed from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at the Massena Moose Lodge, Ames Street. The meal includes spaghetti, meatballs, salad, a roll and desert for $7. A similar spaghetti feed was held Monday night at the Potsdam Elks Lodge.

Judie Trimboli, a parent of one of the Ice Storm players, said the team has received several donations for auction items for the spaghetti feeds, ranging from a Calgary Flames jersey with retired forward and Potsdam native Craig Conroy’s number 24 and items provided by former Clarkson star Steve Zalewski, now skating for the New Jersey Devils farm team in Albany, to donations from Peets Jewelers and a USA Hockey jacket donated by A. Cappione Inc., Massena.

The team has a number of other activities planned for the next few days: They include:

■ An on-going bottle and can collection at CJ’s in Potsdam and Lanueville’s in Massena, where accounts have been set up for the Ice Storm. Ask to have your receipt placed in the team’s envelope.
