Alcoa Inc. and Reynolds Metals Company will pay $19.4 million for damages to the St. Lawrence River, marking the end of a lawsuit with the federal government, State of New York and St. Regis Mohawk Tribe that has persisted for over 20 years.

The settlement stems from Alcoa’s pollution of the St. Lawrence river from the late 1950’s into the 1970’s.

Over $10 million from the settlement will fund ecological restoration projects along the river, including fisheries and wetlands restoration. About $8.4 million will be used to support Mohawk cultural practices, including an apprenticeship program for youth the teach the Mohawk language.

Tribe trustees will hold two informational public meetings to provide more details on the restoration plan.

The first will be held at 6 p.m. on April 17 at the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe Office for the Aging, Akwesasne.

The second will be held at 6 p.m. on April 18 at Dar’s Place Banquet Hall, Massena.
