The state Department of Environmental Conservation is telling residents to avoid contact with coyotes and black bears.

According to the department, increasing temperatures in the region will lead to bear populations moving and coyotes setting up denning areas for new pups.

Some steps offered by the department to avoid coyotes is to not feed them and to not allow pets to run free outside.

To avoid issues with nuisance bears, residents should avoid feeding them or leaving out easily attainable food in bird feeders, garbage cans and dumpsters.

For more information about coyotes, visit www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6971.html. More information about black bears can be found at www.dec.ny.gov/animals/6960.html.
