The proposed agricultural budget to be voted on soon in the state Assembly and Senate includes more than $1.7 million for the New York Farm Viability Institute, a farmer-led nonprofit group that assists agriculture production enterprises across Central and Northern New York.

That figure jumped significantly from the $400,000 proposed in Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s budget. The Senate and Assembly are expected to act on the budget’s agriculture portion this week.

Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie, R-Heuvelton, fought to restore the funding as the Agriculture Committee’s chairwoman.

“Now New York’s farmers are poised to grow, and state government is stepping up with new and restored funding and initiatives to help them take advantage of expanding markets and new opportunities,” she said in a prepared statement.
