Relay for Life looking for volunteers

MASSENA - Organizers of this year’s Massena/Louisville Relay for Life are looking for folks who have about two-and-a-half hours a month to volunteer for the event.

“Right now meetings are about two-and-a-half hours a month. There’s a committee meeting first, then a team meeting afterward. It’s not much time,” Publicity Chair Denise M. Furnace.

This year’s Relay for Life will be held from 6 p.m. June 7 to 6 a.m. June 8 at the Louisville Community Center. But they need help to make it another success, Ms. Furnace said.

“Any time they can put in,” she said. “The biggest thing will be the Friday of Relay, setting things up.”

Some of the tasks that require volunteers are helping get cancer survivors together, getting food together for the survivors at a reception area, registration for the event and taking care of the luminaries that will line the field, shining brightly into the night.

“Last year there were almost 2,100 luminaries,” Ms. Furnace said. “It’s just everywhere that we need help.”

Anyone who can volunteer their time can contact or attend the next meeting, which will be held at 5:30 p.m. April 10 at the Massena Meals on Wheels.

Teams are still forming, and can register at or at the next meeting.

As part of their preparation for the June event, teams will be holding fundraisers. Among those is the Heaven Can Wait bottle drive, which runs until Saturday. Bottles can be dropped off at Laneuville’s or call 250-8124 or 705-8572 for pick-up.

The Commas for a Cure team will be holding a spaghetti dinner fundraiser from 4 to 6:30 p.m. April 19 at Emmanuel Congregational United Church of Christ, 39 W. Orvis St., Massena. The menu includes spaghetti, meatballs and sausage, garlic and plain bread and butter, tossed salad, dessert, and coffee, tea or punch. Take-outs are available, and individuals are asked to bring a container if possible. The event also features a 50/50 raffle.

The cost is $7 and children 5 and under are free.

The No Regrets Relay for Life team will also be holding a fundraiser, a 9-pin no tap tournament at 1 p.m. April 20 at Bowlmor Lanes, Massena.

The entry fee is $100 per five-person team, with payout to the top two teams.

Teams can sign up at Bowlmor Lanes or call 250-3356.

Other fundraisers that are part of that event include “Buy a Strike” and 50/50 raffles as they ask community members to “help us strike out cancer.”
