Library hires CITEC for strategy advice

Ogdensburg Public Library has hired CITEC Business Solutions of Potsdam to assist it in developing a strategic plan.

Library Executive Director Wayne L. Miller said the business consulting firm will conduct training and planning sessions with library officials to create a management plan.

“This will be targeted specifically at the role of the board and the development of a board work plan,” he said. “It will also look at the current bylaws and other governing documents and make recommendations for changes as warranted.”

CITEC is charging the library $2,200 for its efforts which, according to business development director Robert D. Oram, will begin next month and conclude with a report that will be delivered to the library by the end of June.

“The intent is to assist a work group of board members and the library director with development of a clear, practical. usable and inspiring plan for the future that will enable the organization to achieve its goals and increase its value to the community that it serves,” Mr. Oram wrote in a memo describing the scope of his assignment.

Mr. Miller acknowledged that he is far from wanting in terms of library expertise and advice from the trustees, his staff and the Friends of the Library support and fundraising group.

“It is precisely because we have such a wonderful array of talent on the board, staff and Friends that having an objective, outside management group help us develop a common vision, work with us on improving organizational communications, clarify roles, and work with the board as a group to identify a common vision and path forward is so valuable,” he said.

He said since there is more than enough day-to-day business to keep trustees occupied at meetings, having special, outside sessions to talk about the future is important. Getting outside help is a bonus, he said.

“The board retreat I conducted last year was deemed so useful by the board that they wanted to repeat the format and bump up the expectations for results,” Mr. Miller said. “I agree and am glad a powerful tool like CITEC is available to us.”
