Clayton man charged with DWI after brief chase

Following a brief foot chase Saturday night in the town of Pamelia, a Clayton man was charged by Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies with driving while intoxicated.

Deputies said Michael H. Meeks, 35, of 34161 Route 12E, was seen about 8:30 p.m. crossing over the yellow center and white fog lines on Route 12.

When a deputy turned on his vehicle’s police lights near Mustard Road, Mr. Meeks allegedly pulled over near a residence and ran into the woods.

With additional patrols setting a perimeter, Mr. Meeks was found in the brush by a K-9 unit at 8:47 p.m. Deputies said Mr. Meeks exhibited a strong smell of alcohol despite his maintaining that he had not been drinking.

En route to the Metro-Jefferson Public Safety Building, Mr. Meeks allegedly asked deputies to stop at the Fairground Inn on Coffeen Street so he could have a beer.

He later refused to take a breath test, deputies said.

He was issued an appearance ticket for Pamelia Town Court.
