The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department continues to be inundated with opt-out forms from pistol permit holders who don’t want their personal information, including home addresses, to be accessible through Freedom of Information Law requests.

According to account clerk Melinda A. Milne, the county has received more than 2,500 requests since the option was made available as part of the NY SAFE Act.

Ms. Milne said the most common reason people give for filing the forms is the fear someone will break into their homes if they know there are guns available there.

Under the law, pistol permit information is exempt from FOIL requests until May 15. Opt-out forms must be received by that date to avoid disclosure later.
