Eighteen applicants for Remington director

There are so far 18 applicants for the executive director position at the Frederic Remington Art Museum in Ogdensburg.

The deadline to apply for the post was Monday, but Trustee and search committee chairwoman Julie H. Cliff said that the number will probably go higher because applicants’ letters postmarked by April 1 will be accepted.

“So this could go on for a couple of more days,” she said.

Edward A. LaVarnway, the museum’s executive director since 2005, plans retire by June 1. A hiring recommendation will made by May 1.

Mrs. Cliff said that, for the most part, the recruitment process hasn’t generated many responses from outside the state.

She said some of the interest is close to home.

“Most of them are from New York,” Mrs. Cliff said. “There are some from the immediate area.”

No number has been agreed upon as far as how many of the candidates will be interviewed.

“It’s kind of all over the place,” she said. “I’d say it’s a very diverse group.”

The committee’s goal is to have three finalists to choose from.

The annual salary range for the executive director’s position is $46,000 to $50,000.

The job description calls for a candidate with experience in management, planning and grant-writing, with a knowledge of fundraising, fiscal management and administration of an art museum.

The museum is located at 303 Washington St.
