The history of the 10th Mountain Division is getting a new life online through the digital archiving of World War II-era division publications.

In addition to logging the division’s activity during the war period, the Camp Hale Ski-Zette and Blizzard newspapers also document the day-to-day lives of soldiers at the Colorado installation where the division developed and in Europe.

“It’s kind of getting a sense of what soldiers knew and what they were coming across,” said Dennis E. Hagen, an archivist at the 10th Mountain Division Collection of the Denver Public Library Resource Center.

The publications were made available in mid-March through the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection of the Colorado State Library and History Colorado.

Jaci E. Spuhler, a librarian and archivist with the Eagle Valley Library District, which funded the initiative, said the district jumped at the opportunity. She said archiving about 1,000 days of publications cost about $2,000 to complete.

“We considered not having them online a huge gap in the record,” Mrs. Spuhler said. “This puts into the public hands a section of the newspaper record that was important at the time.”

Mr. Hagen said he enjoyed the neat stories in the publications, including one about a wager between soldiers over whether they could walk 75 miles from Camp Hale to Glenwood Springs.

“Some of the guys actually made it,” he said.

The publications can be found at www.coloradohistoricnewspapers.org.
