LOWVILLE Timothy J. Ryan Jr. has spent the past couple of decades overseeing the hiring of numerous hospital and municipal employees.
Now, the human resources director for Lewis County and its municipal hospital is searching for his own replacement, having decided to retire in early June.
The toughest part is finding somebody that has both county and hospital experience, Mr. Ryan said, noting that the hospital side is more complex.
Mr. Ryan spent the past 11 years as director of human resources at Lewis County General Hospital and was additionally appointed in 2011 as the countys personnel director after legislators decided to create their own human resources department.
If it wasnt for wanting to spend time with my grandchildren, Id probably stay another 10 or 15 years, the Pillar Point resident said.
Mr. Ryan, also a trustee and eucharistic minister at Immaculate Conception Church, Brownville, said he would like to spend more time visiting with patients at area nursing home facilities.
I think sometimes our elderly are forgotten, he said.
Before working here, the Syracuse University graduate spent five years in public accounting, then 23 years at Samaritan Medical Center, Watertown, in the finance and human resources departments.
Mr. Ryan said he enjoyed working for his previous employers but had gained respect for the Lowville area over the years, particularly while helping out with the General Brown football program.
This has been a wonderful place to work, he said. The work ethic in the county is unbelievable.
While many hospitals struggle with recruitment and retention of registered nurses and other skilled employees, Lewis County General has not had difficulties, thanks to good workers and internal training programs for those interested in becoming nurses or certified nursing assistants, Mr. Ryan said.
For a small, rural community hospital, I think we do really well, he said.
Mr. Ryan also commended the county-owned hospitals management for investing in state-of-the-art equipment that aids in recruitment of both employees and patients.
Mr. Ryan said he already has received several applications for the position but will continue accepting them for another month or so. Some combination of hospital and county officials then likely will help decide on a human resources director for both entities.
