The Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority is examining the feasibility of lengthening the runway at its Ogdensburg International Airport from 5,200 feet to 6,000 feet to accommodate larger commercial airplanes.
The authority board agreed Wednesday to have a transportation specialist Binghamton consultant, McFarland-Johnson, work with the Federal Aviation Administration to examine the feasibility of the extension.
The airport is located south of the city on Route 812.
OBPA Executive Director Wade A. Davis declined Wednesday and again on Friday to confirm or deny the proposed runway extension, which was described only as to provide planning and programming services associated with the development of a special project at the Ogdensburg International Airport in the resolution that the board approved on Wednesday.
The authority does not comment on negotiations with a potential client, he said Friday.
But board members who did comment were encouraged by the prospect of more business at the airport and the surrounding area.
Anything that brings in more flights and more landings is good for the area, said Ramona A. Breen, the boards assistant secretary. It opens up possibilities.
Board treasurer Donald J. Hooper agreed.
I think it is important to this area and not just Ogdensburg, he said.
Mr. Hooper added that Cape Air, the commuter airline serving Ogdensburg, is doing a good job and shouldnt be concerned about the presence of another, larger airline.
Its not to interfere with Cape Air, but to supplement it, he said.
Mr. Davis said the scope of McFarland-Johnsons job will be separate from the five-year capital improvement plan for which another firm, C&S Engineers, Syracuse, was hired in 2011 to develop.
Board vice chairman Frederick J. Carter agreed.
