Lyme gains first win since 2007

COPENHAGEN — Freshman Taylor Brown surrendered just one run on three hits to help the Lyme softball team snap a six-year losing streak on Monday with a season-opening Frontier League “D” Division victory over host Copenhagen.

The Indians, in their first game under new coach Tony Gullo, scored six runs in the first inning and cruised to its first win since the 2007 season.

Haley Kappus-Kron went 2-for-3, and Meghan Goutremout scored two runs for Lyme (1-0).

LAFARGEVILLE 12, SACKETS HARBOR 0

Amber Klock tallied 10 strikeouts and surrendered just one hit in a complete game shutout, leading the Red Knights to a season-opening “D” Division victory over the host Patriots.

Chanelle Savage drove in two runs, while Lauren Labiendo and Jackie Segouin each provided three hits and a run batted in for LaFargeville (1-0). Two of Labiendo’s hits were triples.

BASEBALL

LAFARGEVILLE 1, SACKETS HARBOR 0

Matt Valin came out on the winning end of a pitchers duel with Billy Newcombe to lead the Red Knights past the Patriots in a season-opening “D” Division game in Sackets Harbor.

Valin finished with 15 strikeouts and allowed two hits in a complete game shutout for LaFargeville. Valin also doubled in the sixth and eventually scored on an error for the only run.

Newcombe gave up just one hit while striking out 14 in a complete game for the Patriots.
