CANTON Although the fundraising goal hasnt been met, Little River Community School plans to start building an addition in May.
Steven A. Molnar, director of the alternative school at 127 County Route 25, said that to lower the price, the building project has been reduced.
Roughly $47,000 has been raised toward the $71,000 estimated cost. Money was raised through events and individual donations, and $2,500 came from the Grasse Roots Fund.
We are close enough that its not wishful thinking. We are moving ahead and will continue to raise money, Mr. Molnar said. Were feeling good about the numbers.
The two-story addition will be constructed by Alvin Graber, Madrid.
The additional 700 square feet will provide room for an extra classroom and a multipurpose room for theater performances, art projects and larger gatherings.
Two small areas also will be created for one-on-one instruction.
It will provide a better floor plan throughout the building, Mr. Molnar said.
The school will have room for five or six more students, with openings primarily for younger ages. This year, about 33 students are enrolled in kindergarten through grade 12.
An additional full-time teacher will be hired, and the application for the job is available on the schools website at www.littleriverschool.org.
An open house for potential new families is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. April 18 at the school.
