Step By Step, the day drop-in center for between 35 and 55 mentally ill clients, will relocate May 1 a few doors away to larger accommodations in the former Ogdensburg Mall.
The agency and its neighboring companion second-hand goods store, Another Step, will move from a 5,152-square-foot space at 103 Ford St. to a rented 7,000-square-foot space at 101 Ford St., once occupied by the United Helpers Day Habilitation Center.
Executive Director David A. Bayne said the new accommodations will not only be more spacious indoors, but outdoors as well. Step By Steps cigarette-smoking clients will have more room to light up outside without being a distraction to passersby.
Were kind of an eyesore where we are now, he said.
There are also plans, Mr. Bayne said, to install a door at the rear of the building and place a gazebo outside for a gathering place for the clients.
Step By Step employs 12 people who work both full time and part time, Mr. Bayne said.
The Another Step store employs one person who works part time.
