The Mort Backus and Sons auto dealership is in the process of a major renovation expected to last through the fall.
Its going to be a big project, Michael Backus, general manager, said. Theyre making some major changes.
The project kicked off this week and has, so far, focused largely on demolition – something that is immediately evident to anyone driving by the building.
At the end of the project the car dealership at 4835 Route 68, Ogdensburg, will be 5,000 square feet larger, boasting a new showroom, a drive-through service area capable of accommodating four cars, additional office space and an employee training room.
Mr. Backus said the new showroom will extend toward the road 22 feet farther than the building currently does, enabling the General Motors dealership to display three cars at a time.
We used to have a showroom but as we continued to grow we allocated that space for offices, Mr. Backus said. We decided we wanted to keep up with the times and provide our customers with some nicer amenities than we had before.
This is the seventh expansion Mort Backus and Sons has seen since the business opened in the 1950s.
Its the biggest undertaking weve ever done, Mr. Backus said. As business continued to grow, weve grown with it.
The expansion will also add a sense of uniformity to the building that will tie it in with other General Motor dealerships across the nation.
Every shop is different, but they want certain appointments on the building, Mr. Backus said.
Mort Backus and Sons employs 34 full-time people and services new and used GM vehicles.
The renovations are being completed by Heritage Homes, Massena. Beardsley Design Associates, Malone, took on the architectural work.
Its fun to watch, Mr. Backus said. We hope to celebrate Halloween in the new building.
