School bus involved in accident at Beaver River Central School

BEAVER FALLS — Students and staff members from the Thousand Islands and LaFargeville central school districts suffered minor injuries Friday morning when a bus hit a light pole in the parking lot of Beaver River Central School.

Four students and a music teacher were treated at Lewis County General Hospital, Lowville, while the other students were picked up by their parents and were examined by the school nurse before receiving further treatment in Watertown, according to school officials.

The unidentified driver and another music teacher on the bus were checked out at the scene, school officials said.

Thousand Islands Superintendent Frank C. House said all of the injuries were non-life-threatening and consisted of bumps, bruises and cuts.

The group was at Beaver River to rehearse for the Spring Bi-County Festival for senior high bands slated for 2 p.m. Saturday at the 9508 Artz Road school.

Despite injuries, a couple of students will be able to perform at the concert, Mr. House said.

The bus ran into the light pole’s 3-foot-tall concrete abutment during some confusion inside the vehicle regarding where the students should be dropped off, Mr. House said.

Beaver River Central School District Superintendent Leueen Smithling said she was thankful the injuries were not more severe. She also commended her district’s employees, particularly custodians who helped riders get off the bus and those from the nurse’s office and school-based health clinic who provided initial treatment to all of the patients.

“My staff did a fantastic job,” Mrs. Smithling said.

State police are investigating the incident.
