Canton Canoe Weekend Ready May 3-5

CANTON - The 52nd Canton Canoe Weekend: Rushton Memorial Races will be held May 3-5 at Taylor Park, Miner Street Road, Canton.

The schedule of events is as follows:

May 3- Rushton Tour: 7 miles downriver

4 p.m. start at CR 21 bridge over Grasse River

5 to 6 p.m. finish at Willow Island/Canton Island Park downtown Canton. 5 to 6 p.m.: Barb Heller’s Hot Dog’s and TAUNY Jam on Willow Island. 6 p.m.: Dedication in memory of Dick Miller’s 50 years of service to the Rushton Races (Willow Island)

May 4- Taylor Park

9:30 a.m.:- Modern Rushton Races. 1, 3, 5 & 8 mile races on loop courses, start & finish @ Taylor Park. Youth, Middle & High School Students, Adults, College Students. Canoes or Kayaks: solo, tandem. Antique canoes, 3 & 4-person canoes, Voyager canoes.,12:30 p.m.: Marathon Canoe & Kayak Races, start & finish @ Taylor Park. C-1 Pro Marathon: 14-miles (solo racing canoes- best paddlers from US & Canada). ,C-1 & K-1 Amateur Marathon: 12-miles (solo racing canoes & kayaks- best paddlers in the region). Designated a points race by NYMCRA (NY Marathon Canoe Racing Assn)

May 5- Taylor Park

9:30 a.m. - Marathon Canoe Races, start & finish @ Taylor Park. C-2 Pro Marathon: 14-miles (tandem racing canoes- best paddlers from US & Canada). C-2 Amateur Marathon: 12-miles (tandem racing canoes & kayaks- best paddlers in the region)

Designated a points race by NYMCRA (NY Marathon Canoe Racing Assn). 1:30 p.m. - Rushton Relay, start & finish @ Taylor Park. ,Teams of 6 paddlers take turns (2 at a time) paddling the same canoe over the three legs of the course (1 mile; 0.7 miles; 0.3 miles). After each leg the teams switch paddlers at the beach.

Special teams of: students, college students, adults. Special award for best dressed team.
