GOUVERNEUR The death of a woman who was missing for nearly a week has been ruled an accident by St. Lawrence County Coroner June H. Wood after an autopsy Sunday.
The body of Elizabeth A. Smith, 40, was discovered Saturday in a wooded area near Factory Street, less than a mile from her home at 183 Grove St. She died of hypothermia, and there were no other injuries, according to Ms. Wood.
Ms. Smith told her family she was going for a walk about 6 a.m. on April 7. When she did not return, she was reported missing April 8. The search ended Saturday when an unidentified 911 caller reported that he had found the body.
