Celebrates centennial: Pauline Bassette, Newton Falls, will celebrate her 100th birthday with an open house at the Clifton-Fine Community Center, Star Lake, on April 20.
Born April 21, 1913, in West Pierrepont, she is the daughter of the late Charles and Edith Blackmer Dean. She married Lloyd Neil Bassette on June 22, 1957. He died June 16, 1988.
Mrs. Bassett was a teacher and later an elementary librarian for 32 years, retiring in 1970 from Clifton-Fine Central School, Star Lake.
Graduates: Justin P. Lister, Ohio, formerly of Rodman, graduated April 5 from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy after 22 weeks of training. Cadets were trained on core values, crash investigation, criminal and traffic law, detection of impaired drivers, firearms, physical fitness, self-defense and emergency vehicle operations.
Trooper Lister was honored as top performer in firearms in the 154th Ohio State Highway Patrol Class. He has been assigned to the Elyria, Ohio, post, and started his field-training period April 8.
Trooper Lister, son of Kathy Lister, Rodman, graduated from South Jefferson Central School, Adams. He received a degree from Binghamton University, where was named to the 2012 Directors Honor Roll. He won several wrestling championships in both high school and college levels.
Donation: Excellus BlueCross BlueShield recently donated $500 to Cornell Cooperative Extension Association of Jefferson County. The funds will be used to purchase pedometers for participants in the extensions nutrition programming. Winner: Gail Stevenson, of Cape Vincents John C. Londraville American Legion Post 832 Auxiliary, received second place for Jefferson Countys Auxiliary Poppy Centerpiece Contest. Amanda Woods, daughter of Donald and Christine Woods, Ogdensburg
Honored: Zachary J. Smith, Lisbon, industrial technology management major at SUNY Canton, recently received a Chancellor Award for Student Excellence. Mr. Smith was honored for holding the highest grade point average while in one of the colleges certificate programs. He was also the bachelors level Outstanding Graduate of the year. Mr. Smith designed, engineered, managed and led the building of a training facility and primary school in South Sudan, Africa, during spring 2012 through a Christian organization. He is vice president of the Campus Ministries club and won a certificate of appreciation from the Christian Fellowship Center, Madrid.
Honored: Abby Black, Turin, recently received a 2013 Chancellors Award for Student Excellence. Ms. Black, a senior at Herkimer County Community College, is majoring in liberal arts and sciences social science. She is captain of the womens softball team and is a first team All-American, All-Region and All-Conference selectee. Ms. Black interned with the Lewis County Opportunities, a nonprofit agency working to provide low-income families with food, clothing and household necessities.
