Judge: Ogdensburg men’s murder trial could last up to four weeks

CANTON — Judge Jerome J. Richards on Monday advised prospective jurors to expect the murder trial of three Ogdensburg men accused in the 2010 death of another city man to last between two and four weeks.

No jurors were seated Monday, as questioning of the first 18 prospective jurors was still in progress when court ended for the day at 4:30 p.m. Judge Richards finished his questioning of those individuals, with attorneys set to begin their queries Tuesday morning.

Once chosen, the panel will hear the case against Anthony W. Lalonde, Michael S. Thorpe and Michael D. Durand. Investigators say Ralph E. “Gene” Lawton, 83, died after a scuffle during what investigators described as a robbery by the trio at Mr. Lawton’s Ford Street apartment in Ogdensburg on Nov. 18, 2010.

Mr. Lalonde, then 31, of 1106 Ford St., Mr. Thorpe, then 25, of 904 Elizabeth St., and Mr. Durand, then 29, of 513 Elizabeth St., were charged with second-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

Police said they fled with more than $1,000 and prescription drugs, while Mr. Lawton died later of his injuries.

As many as 47 witnesses could be called during the trial, according to a list read aloud by Judge Richards.

Mr. Durand is represented by attorney Gary W. Miles, Mr. Lalonde is represented by Lloyd G. Grandy II, and Mr. Thorpe is represented by William John Galvin.

Assistant District Attorney Amanda N. Nissen is prosecuting the case.
