POTSDAM - Iris Anable lives in a Mayfield Apartment in Potsdam. She is a feisty, caring, animal lover living on a modest fixed income. Back in 2006, when the Potsdam Humane Society needed to build a new shelter, Iris made an annual pledge of $10 each month.
At the end of the year, Iris came to shelter with her last check in hand, completing her $120 pledge. She cheerfully announced the experience had not been in the least painful .
And with that, she pledged to continue to do the same in 2007. So it went, 2008, $10 a month, and the same in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Today, in 2013, those $10 monthly gifts are still helping the animals. At the start, Mrs. Anable never thought that she would be donating over $800. Over time, the $10 a month gift really has become something much greater than it seemed.
She is an inspiration, according to PHS board member Bonnie Boyd. What our animals need is the help of a few hundred, or even a thousand Iris Anables. In 2009, the community responded to a challenge from Dr. Michael and Barbara Maresca. That community leadership and support enabled us to replace our 30 year-old facility with a new, improved and larger animal shelter. Increased capacity, though, means higher operating costs.
If I can do this, I know others can, Mrs. Anable said. Caring for animals is a very important thing to do, and a simple gift of $10 or more a month, can make a big difference. I challenge every animal lover to join me in making the commitment. You will feel so good when you do!
