CANTON – A dinner and silent auction for numerous artworks, crafts, gift certificates, furniture and more takes place April 30 at The Club, 25, Court St.

The Society of the United Helpers is sponsoring its Spring Fling to raise funds for the nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people with developmental disabilities and mental health issues.

“We also offer skilled nursing, outpatient rehabilitation, speech and occupational therapy, children’s services, senior housing, adult residences and independent retirement,” Director of Development Lori M. Smithers said Tuesday. “I think we fill the need in the county that otherwise wouldn’t be here.”

The organization estimates it serves at least 1,000 people a day and employs over 900 at locations throughout St. Lawrence County.

“I think most people would be surprised to know we also offer services like sub-acute rehab after a hip replacement, so that we can get them back home to where they want to be,” Ms. Smithers said.

All of the proceeds from the auction will benefit programs and amenities for residents, such as grills, patio furniture, outings, and games.

“We want to provide home-like amenities for our residents, because want them to feel they have a home with us,” Ms Smithers said.

Auction items will be donated by businesses in the community.

“We got the idea after we looked at ways to involve and educate the community, as well as shine a spotlight on businesses who regularly donate to the cause,” Ms. Smithers said.

The Spring Fling and silent and live auctions will begin with a cocktail hour from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by dinner. To register, contact the Society office at 393-3074 by Monday.

Tickets are $25 per person and include dinner and dessert.

Dinner choices are cornbread-stuffed chicken breast, bacon-wrapped filet mignon, haddock oregonatta or eggplant parmesan. Musical entertainment will be provided by classical guitarist Nicholas Boswell.

The Society of the United Helpers will also honor newly appointed Society Emeritus Members Verna Hutchinson, Norton Taylor and Christopher Acker.

To purchase tickets or for more information, please call the Development Office at the Society of United Helpers at 393-3074, extension 271, go online to www.unitedhelpers.org or search for United Helpers on Facebook.
