T.I. Area Habitat gearing up for Superior Street build

Everything soon will come together for the Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity‘s project at 1130 Superior St.

Construction of a single-family home there has been delayed since a September fire destroyed two storage trailers and thousands of dollars’ worth of tools that were on site.

Board President Walter H. Plumley said more than $1,000 in donations has since come in for the purchase of tools lost in the fire, and now crews are gearing up for the project.

“We’re doing preliminary work in April, and hope to pour the foundation in May,” Mr. Plumley said. “What we’re going to do June 1 and June 2 is hold a building blitz. On June 1, we’ll have a ceremonial groundbreaking and once that’s done, we’ll raise the house.”

Walls, which will be prebuilt by Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services students, and trusses will go up that weekend, and windows and the roof will be installed.

“That’s ambitious on our part,” Mr. Plumley said. “It’s exciting for us because we’ve never done this before. There’s a lot of firsts here. Because of the incident last year, we’re behind schedule, so we tried to come up with creative ways to make it work.”

He said the agency hopes to gather a large group of volunteers for that weekend, to help make up some of the building-season time lost because of the fire. Those who would like to volunteer can call Pamela M. Rajner, Habitat volunteer coordinator, at 486-7321.

Although donations continue to trickle in to help the agency recoup some tools, Mr. Plumley said Habitat also is looking for the donation of a couple of 10-by-10-foot pop-up canopies to provide shade for volunteers during breaks.

To help with donations, call Mr. Plumley at 788-1640.
