General Brown BOE decides against bus garage capital project

DEXTER — The Board of Education decided Monday during its monthly meeting not to ask the public to support a $350,000 capital project to spruce up part of its bus garage not affected by an April 2012 fire there.

Members of the General Brown Central School District board had considered the idea for several months, following the fire that destroyed 20 of the district’s 23 bus fleet and damaged some of the garage structure. The capital project would cover the cost to repair 8,500 square feet of the roof, which has begun to deteriorate and is out of warranty, while insurance money will replace 9,400 square feet of roof that was destroyed by the fire.

Replacing or repairing bus lifts had also been considered.

“We need to focus on the budget, and push this down the road,” said Michael E. Kucharski, board member.

Board President Tasha L. Richards said she has heard misinformation about the budget, and former capital projects, such as “if the district is in such dire financial straights now, why is there a turf field?” On Monday, she said the turf field was part of a project approved by a previous board.

“I don’t think now is the time to go to the voters with a capital project,” she said. “That’s just my opinion.”

Other members agreed. The board decided to consider the issue during its reorganizational meeting in July.
